The Truth about Goats
As further allegations of sexual misconduct are levelled at film directors, most of the public are questioning why ‘naked’ interviews are deemed more reliable than a well-referenced curriculum vitae. With many male producers seemingly under the impression that they are conducting a medical examination rather than an audition.
This habit of getting job applicants to undress does not crop up in other professions but would certainly liven up most hustings. For instance, asking a potential police officer to get naked during an interview only makes sense if they are a novelty stripper.
Explained one young actress: ‘It was odd, I’d seen Ian McKellen (81) and Jim Broadbent (71) go in and out of the audition fully clothed, but when it was my turn, I was asked to undress – which is peculiar for a production of Pride & Prejudice. Anyway, the director explained to me that despite me having spent three years at Drama School, he still needed to see if my nipples could act.’
Stage actors are not asked to audition nude and it would be hard to imagine how horrendous casting a Panto would be or finding Santa Claus for a shopping centre. The actress confirmed: ‘I could tell it was standard practise from the bum prints on the casting couch’.
